Summer officially starts June 21
Even though you are supposed to gaze at the sun and prepare elaborate monuments which will capture the rays of the sun in strategic places at the moment of the solstice, I have no time for that because…one of my children is still in school for 3 more days! In summer! When his older brother has been out for 2 weeks already! The injustice and un-solsticeness of it all. I can tell you that the Druids, Mayans and Ancient Egyptians would NOT approve…
And Sarge? As you can see, he is waiting anxiously at the door for his ball-throwing playmate to be released on vacation. Oh wait…
But there are reasons to get excited for summer in New Jersey. First of all, the best fruit anywhere is now ready to eat. The blueberry has arrived.
The blueberry will be closely followed by my other favorite fruit, the crown jewel of New Jersey. Tomatoes!!

It’s so exciting to see these plants coming along. I’m already dreaming of gazpacho, summer salad and tomato-and-mayo sandwiches on Karen’s toasted Pullman bread.
Add a little cucumber (which Andrew and his team is starting to harvest this week!) and it’s pure heaven.
Everybody on the farm is getting ready for summer…even the sheep, who are finally shedding the remnants of their dreadlocks winter coat.
Enjoy the solstice and the weekend. It’s going to be perfect summer weather.
