What Makes Our Processor Special?

From the beginning, we got into farming as a reaction to the way conventionally raised livestock lived and died. I guess you could say that we decided to invest in building and certifying our own USDA inspected slaughter and processing facility for the very same reasons, with humane treatment of the animals standing out as the greatest influence.

We did not want to truck our animals to a slaughterhouse hours away, only to leave them in a pen with strange animals, people, sights and sounds. For us, losing control of the process at the time when you most need to ‘get it right’ felt unacceptable.

Today, Double Brook Farm is one of the only farms in the country with an on-farm USDA inspected abattoir – allowing us to slaughter and process our animals right here, where they were born and raised.

Completed in 2015, the facility was built using the designs of Dr. Temple Grandin – a thought leader in animal behavior and champion of humane treatment of livestock for slaughter.

Everything about the construction and our process is meant to reduce the stress of our animals.

They are led from our fields to the open air holding pen, and then through the chute, by a farmer they know. And because we manage our schedule from beginning to end, we can, and do, take our time every step of the way.

Finally, for the consumer, we are always 100% sure that the meat you are getting is the meat we raised.
