It’s All Happening

Now that we've turned the corner on the harshest of conditions, the cycle begins again.

We will start raising chicks into broilers in about week (you're welcome, Hopewell Post Office!), and the egg-laying hens and their guardian dogs will soon go back out to pasture from their winter enclosure. Preparations are being made as we wait for it to get a little warmer.

It ain't pretty, and it's kind of muddy, but…ahh the fresh air.

Personal maintenance is a must. We all need a pedicure at this time of year to get ready for prime time. The sheep are no different. Males and females alike get their hooves trimmed (and an oral injection of oregano oil and garlic, yuck!) before they head out to the promised grasslands.

And the wallows are back. Who would have thought that the frozen ground would ever give way to this luscious bath of mud and clay?

And finally, the lambs head outside and learn the ropes as it comes to the ruminant lifestyle. But an extra squeeze to send them off seems appropriate. As you can tell, this little gal loves this about as much as my (human) boys do when I hug them in public!

Waiting out the freeze

It's been cold. Real cold. The kind of cold that has texture and sticks to you when you come inside. Alternatively, the kind of cold that lets you know if dental work is imminent. The kind of cold…well, you know how cold it's been. We have seen some intense weeks ...

Ready for 2026

Happy Holidays to everyone! Even though our nuclear family was far and wide, we had a whole flock of friends and extended family here to celebrate the season. Quiet and fun. Fun enough that the cleanse is actually starting BEFORE Jan 1. It's an emergency. We are getting ready for ...

Thanksgiving ordering in high gear

Happy Halloween! We were huddled indoors much of yesterday (much needed blustery, rainy day) drinking pumpkin spice coffee and making soup. But our team is back at it with the sun reportedly coming out and the wind drying everything up. The turkeys are coming along…generally terrorizing our neighbors, their guardian ...
