Halloween on the Farm

In keeping with the mood of the season, I was not surprised to step outside and find this 5-inch praying mantis feasting on a banded woolly bear caterpillar. It didn't even look up, it just kept eating..like a zombie. I wonder if the mantis slowed down enough to detect whether a long or short winter was predicted.

The colors of fall and the falling leaves are everywhere. Especially in the pastures.

The chickens and sheep are enjoying the new grasses that came up in the heat wave we had last week. But I can assure you, Kasey is liking the cooler temps.

The chickens will lay and grow a little slower in the winter months. But they are very hardy – as long as they get shelter from the wind.

We have a new breed on premises. Looks like Ancona.

Back to the barn in the afternoon to clean eggs…

And check in on our NEWEST GUARD DOG, a Great Pyrenees puppy, called Cap. Adorable.
