About The Farm

The Food You Want From The Farmer You Know

We originally started Double Brook Farm in 2004 to raise a couple of cows, some chickens, and a few sheep for our own consumption in a way that felt right to us. Looking back, it’s also clear that we started the farm to get ourselves and our young kids connected to the land.

Tractor

As we began building our barns and telling people about our vision, more and more friends, acquaintances, and local businesses became interested in purchasing the meat and eggs we would be producing. Like us, they wanted to know where their food was coming from, see the fields on which the animals were raised and grazed, and support an alternative to the conventional meat industry.

They wanted the transparency of knowing their farmer.

The thinking is simple: a local farmer is accountable to the local community. If there is a problem with the product, they cannot hide behind regulations and a corporate face – the responsibility starts and ends with them.

As we scaled up our operations, we studied best regenerative farming practices and became focused on raising our livestock in way that was sustainable, humane, and supported animal and soil health without the use of pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones.

The result being a premium meat that we feel good about eating and selling.

We are now a full-scale livestock farm raising sheep, pigs, turkeys, chickens (broilers and layers), and limited cattle. Almost all of our animals are bred and born on the farm.

The sheep and cattle eat only grass, grazed over 800 acres. Our pigs and poultry supplement their pasture-foraged diet with a locally grown non-GMO grain blend that we grind on demand. We never use hormones or antibiotics. And we have a great team of farmers who believe in our mission and care for the animals.

USDA Inspected

On-Farm Processor

And finally, in 2015, we became one of the only farms in the country to have an on-farm USDA inspected slaughterhouse. This piece is extremely meaningful to us as our animals never have to experience the stress of traveling in a trailer to a processor. And our customers know they are truly getting our meat.

Whelp, we got the hay in and bedded down the animals. But this is going to be a loooooooong dig-out #blizzard2016
First lamb of the season! Born overnight during one of the coldest nights last week. She’s doing great. We haven’t named her yet any suggestions?
Looking for our delicious pastured meats this week? Come to the winter farmers market in Princeton this Thursday from 11 AM to 3 PM. Say hi to William at our tent and get all your provisions. Plus, there is a Valentine’s Bows & Bow Ties puppy pageant! Starting at 1 PM, you can dress up your pup in their Valentine’s Day finest and receive awards based on general cuteness. The Puppy Promenade for Halloween was hilarious and fantastic. Check out @princetonfarmersmarket for all the details
A lot of people ask how our animals are doing in this cold. While it is very frigid, the animals actually do much better in these temperatures than when it’s extremely hot. They have plenty of hay to burrow down in, and wind breaks and shelters. We check them at least twice a day to make sure their water is not frozen and that they are in good shape. Hopefully a couple more days of this deep freeze and then we can move into some balmy 20s and 30s #deepfreeze #farmlife #winterfarm #pasturedlamb #greatpyrenees #heritageturkeys
