I went out to the pasture by Bayberry Road to see how the broilers were doing on pasture. Even in this dry summer, there are bugs and grasses to nourish the birds. And while the weather is good – it's the best diet around. We have 5 wagons with broilers, that are moved at least once a day. How, you ask?? Well…
We start by pulling a truck with a winch into place, and connect the cable to the wagon, which has wheels. Rebecca was on the task this particular morning.
Once attached, the winch is started and the wagon slowly rolls onto fresh grass.
Rebecca uses the rattle sticks to gently move the chickens away from the back of the wagon so they don't get caught. And, one by one, the wagons move across the field.
Once on fresh grass, the broilers are happily grazing away.
The layers also get their own chicken wagon, but with much more freedom as they are older, heartier and have 2 guard dogs.
And tomorrow, we'll do it all again.
