We are deep into our stretch of turkey hatching right now in preparation for Thanksgiving. A farmer starts the season many many months (sometimes a year) in advance. We have turkeys of every stage…and personality.
The newly hatched poult – very curious and chatty. These guys are a day old!

The 2 week old. It is amazing how quickly their feathers grow. Overnight they have feathered wings – and they aren't even drinking Red Bull. You'd never know, as they have boundless energy. Right up to the point where they fall to the ground, mid-stride, and snooze.

Then the juveniles. They react with suspicion to authority, are working their way into their lanky frames, and hang out in cliques. Soon they will be out on pasture into the lush greenery of spring.

Jon and I had a great talk at the Center for Modern Aging this week. We got a chance to describe our farm and what brings us peace in our work at Double Brook. Of course, there can be no peace without there being some frustration (point-counterpoint, ying yang, you know), and we hashed it all out for the assembled. In reality, it is so nice to take a step back and remind ourselves why we do what we do. Thank you CMA for inviting us!

Last but not least – come look for us at the farmers markets this season. We are at the Princeton Farmers Market every Thursday from 10am-3pm and (new this year) the Lambertville Farmers Market on Sundays, 9am-12pm. William (and sometimes young William, and sometimes me, Drew, or Jon) will be happy to sell you our pastured pork, chicken, turkey, lamb, beef, dog food, bacon, sausages and more.
