All these incredible photos are by JK: Martin Tract neighbor and wildlife aficionado! Just look at the view she got of these Blue Birds. These are from photos JK took at the Plainsboro Preserve, but she sent me one yesterday (not as clear) of a ‘Blue Boy’ on our fence post. I have no idea if she was … [Read more...]
Cows at Martin Tract
I moseyed on over to the Martin tract the other day to see what was happening with the cows, sheep and chickens. The sun was out and the mercury was hitting the mid 50s. A perfect day for animal watching! As you can see, the cows were doing their thing – neck deep in hay. The desire for a different view prompted … [Read more...]
You Know It’s Spring When… Lambs Are Coming
Taylor sent me these photos this afternoon. One of the ewes we recently bought was bred short (meaning the ram was in with the ladies a little early…) and our first lamb of 2014 was born overnight! The real action begins when the earth is soft enough to dig into. Below is Charlton gazing out at the snow. Mostly there is planning … [Read more...]
They Grow So Fast
One amazing thing about pigs is their ability to reproduce – and grow – at lighting speed. The gestation period for a pig is 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days – ON THE NOSE. We do have some piglets just born over by the solar barn. Here they are peeking out of their enclosure… These little guys above are probably 2 weeks … [Read more...]
Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow or What?
Feeling the Need to See Something Green? We know we are looking forward to warming sun and tall grass in short order. Following are some farm photos from springs past, where the fields are lush, the animals are content and the word ‘Polar Vortex’ has no application. Enjoy! … [Read more...]
Update and Activity at the Vegetable Fields
For most of the deep winter, our vegetable fields look a little something like this: Underneath, the fields are resting. So, for the remainder of the winter, we will be increasing our offerings of fresh produce. Andrew uses the following guidelines: #1 is it Local? # is it Organic/Sustainable? #3 is it fairly … [Read more...]
